Olive trees and a walled garden at the foot of the Mount of Olives make up the scene in this view of Gethsemane, the site Christian tradition associates with Jesus's prayer and arrest. The photochrom process, developed in Switzerland and sold in America by the Detroit Publishing Company, produced vivid color from black-and-white negatives. Tourists and churchgoers bought such views as souvenirs and as aids to imagining the places described in scripture. Printed in the 1890s, the picture shows how Holy Land travel and religious imagery were being shared through commercial color prints.
