Many of the Library of Congress's photochrom views show English churches, but this one is a view of St. Marys Church in Folkestone, a Channel port town on the Kent coast. The image dates from roughly the 1890s and was made with the photochrom process, which built a color picture from several lithographic stones, each inked in a different hue. The Detroit Publishing Company sold these views in America, and this print is listed under number 10315 in its 1905 catalog of English scenes. Its soft, saturated colors show how commercial travel views presented Victorian England to American buyers.
