Porthminster Beach, on the western side of St Ives, is a wide sweep of sand that set the town's holiday trade apart from its older harbor, where the fishing fleet worked. By the 1890s, the branch railway that reached St Ives in 1877 had brought a steady stream of visitors, and artists were drawn to the town's light and harbor scenes. This photochrom print, one of the commercially produced color views of England, shows how the process rendered such seaside scenes in soft, hand-tinted-looking hues for travelers and armchair viewers.
