Beacon Cove sits on the rugged north coast of Cornwall, near the resort town of Newquay, where cliffs and sandy coves drew visitors as the seaside holiday grew popular in Victorian England. This print is one of the hand-tinted photochrom views produced in the 1890s, when a process developed in Switzerland let photographs be reproduced as color lithographs. The colors were added by artists working from a black-and-white negative, so the sea, rock and grass show the palette a publisher expected a tourist to want. The series was sold as souvenirs and gives a snapshot of how the Cornish coast was presented to travelers at the time.
