Milking time" shows a working rural routine rather than a famous landmark, which sets it apart from the cathedrals and castles that dominate the Views of England series. The photochrom process used to make it was developed in Switzerland in the 1880s and produced vivid color from photographic originals. The Detroit Publishing Company later issued the view in the United States, listing it as number 11363 in its 1905 catalog. The date is estimated only to the 1890s, so the scene reflects late Victorian countryside life, when dairy work was still largely done by hand.
