Totnes, a market town on the River Dart in Devon, is the subject here, with attention on its landing place, where boats once tied up along the river. The print uses the photochrom process, an early method that turned photographs into color through a series of lithographic stone plates, and the Detroit Publishing Company issued it in its 1905 catalog for American buyers. The photograph itself dates from the 1890s, a period when such color views of English towns were popular with travelers. The hand-applied color gives the water and old stonework a soft, painted quality.
