Laboe's bathing place sits on the Kiel Fjord in Schleswig-Holstein, on the Baltic coast of northern Germany, and in the 1890s it drew holidaymakers from the nearby city of Kiel. This photochrom print is a color reproduction made by a process that Swiss photographers developed in the 1880s and 1890s to turn black-and-white negatives into colored prints. The Detroit Publishing Company later sold such prints in the United States, and this one appears in its 1905 catalog of German views, which shows how the company marketed European scenery to American buyers.
