Flensburg sits at the head of a narrow fjord near the Danish border, and this view is taken from the Ballastberg, a rise that gives a wide look over the town and its harbor. The print is a photochrom, a process developed in Switzerland in the 1890s that hand-colored a photographic base with a set of stone-printed color layers, giving the scene its soft, painterly tones. Detroit Publishing Co. issued it in America under catalog number 6823, part of its large series of German views sold to travelers and households in the early twentieth century.
