Egern is a small village on the eastern shore of Lake Tegernsee, a glacier-carved lake in the Bavarian Alps about 50 kilometers south of Munich. This photochrom print, made by the Detroit Publishing Company, captures the lakeside settlement in the years around 1890 to 1900, when the Tegernsee was a favored retreat for city visitors. Photochrom was a process that hand-colored tones were laid over a black-and-white photograph, giving views like this one a painted, postcard-bright look. The Detroit company's catalog numbering, shown here as print no. 8408, helps date and identify the series of German views it sold to travelers and collectors.
