Hangman Bridge, or Henkersteg in German, is a covered wooden footbridge over the Pegnitz River in Nuremberg, and its name recalls the town executioner, whose home lay across the water. This picture is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s that printed a photograph from several lithographic stones, each inked by hand. The Detroit Publishing Company issued this numbered view, catalogued as print 1541 in its German series, which it sold to American buyers as travel souvenirs around the 1890s.
