Few beer halls carry as much history as the Hofbräuhaus on the Platzl in Munich, shown here in a color view from the 1890s. The building began in the late 1500s as the court brewery of the Bavarian dukes, and it later opened to the public as a large beer hall that became a gathering place for locals and visitors alike. This print was made by the photochrom process, which used a series of lithographic stones to add color to a photograph, and the Detroit Publishing Company distributed such views in America as travel souvenirs.
