Rothenburg ob der Tauber's St. Jacob's Church rises above the medieval town with its twin towers and Gothic bulk, a landmark that drew visitors even in the 1890s. Inside stands the Holy Blood altarpiece carved by Tilman Riemenschneider and completed around 1505, one of the most important late Gothic works in Germany. This photochrom print comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold such color views of Europe to American buyers around the turn of the century. The process layered several lithographic stones to give the scene a painted, saturated look, so the church appears more like a postcard memory of a storybook town than a plain record of its stone.
