Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a walled medieval town on the Tauber River in Bavaria, and this view shows it as a general panorama of its roofs and surrounding ground. The print was made with the photochrom process, a Swiss method that combined photographs with multiple color stones to produce vivid, painterly color. In the 1890s, when this image was likely made, the town's intact walls and half-timbered houses were drawing a growing number of travelers interested in old German towns. The print also came through the Detroit Publishing Co., which sold photochroms of European scenes to American buyers.
