Mittenwald lies in Upper Bavaria, with the jagged peaks of the Karwendel range rising just behind its houses, and this view puts that mountain backdrop at the center. The town had been known for violin making since the late 1600s, a craft that gave it a reputation well beyond Germany. The print is a photochrom, a process in which a black-and-white negative was transferred to several stone plates, each inked in a different color and printed in register. Detroit Publishing Co. included it in its 1905 catalog.
