This view shows a footbridge over the Hollenthalklamm, a narrow gorge in the Upper Bavarian Alps near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where the Hammersbach stream has cut deep into the rock. Gorge walks like this drew tourists from the 1890s onward, when rail links made the Bavarian mountains easier to reach. The picture was made with the photochrom process, a color printing method developed in Zurich, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold these prints in the United States. Its catalog number and 1905 date show how the firm marketed German scenery to American buyers.
