Set in the Bavarian capital, this view looks down the nave of the Basilica of St. Boniface, a Romanesque Revival church that was completed in the mid-nineteenth century for a Benedictine abbey. Its architect, Friedrich von Gärtner, was a leading figure in the Munich building boom under King Ludwig I, and the interior's painted walls and round arches reflect the period's taste for medieval forms. The photochrom process used here, which combined photography with hand-applied color stones, was then a novel way to render such interiors in color for travelers and armchair tourists.
