Erdmannsdorf lies in the Riesengebirge, the Giant Mountains along the Silesian border, and this view pairs that village with the Elbgrund, the valley where the Elbe River begins its course toward the North Sea. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the 1890s that used several stone lithographs to build up its hues, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold such views in the United States. Its record dates the image to roughly the decade before 1900, when the region drew summer visitors seeking mountain walks and clean air.
