Few buildings in Kiel signal the German navy's growing ambitions as plainly as the Marine Academy, which trained officers for the fleet based on the Baltic coast of Schleswig-Holstein. Kiel became a major naval center after German unification, and the academy's presence helped make the city's harbor a focus of imperial naval life. This color view is a photochrom, a process that used several lithographic stones to add hand-tinted-looking color to a photographic image. Detroit Publishing Co. sold such prints in the United States around 1905, and the catalog number on this copy suggests it was one of a series of German views offered to American buyers.
