High Tor is a steep limestone cliff rising above the River Derwent near Matlock, in the Derbyshire Dales of central England, and this view shows the rock face and the wooded river valley below it. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the late 1880s that used several lithographic stones, one per color, to reproduce a photograph. Detroit Publishing Company, which held American rights to the process, issued many such views of Britain and Europe for tourists and armchair travelers, and its 1905 catalog lists this print under its own numbering.
