A flight of stone steps at Haddon Hall, the medieval and Tudor manor house near Bakewell in Derbyshire, England, forms the focus of this view. The house had changed little by the 1890s, when the photograph was made, and its gardens and stairways drew visitors touring the English countryside. The color comes from the photochrom process, a Swiss method of hand-retouched color printing that the Detroit Publishing Company sold in the United States, and this example appears in the company's 1905 catalog of English views.
