Bakewell sits on the River Wye in Derbyshire, and this view looks across the river toward the town, a vantage that was a favorite with tourists of the period. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland that produced soft, painterly tones from photographic negatives. It comes from the Detroit Publishing Company's catalog J of 1905, one of many views of English towns and landscapes the firm sold to American buyers. Its date is estimated to fall between about 1890 and 1900, so it captures the town shortly before the twentieth century.
