Dorothy Vernon's Walk at Haddon Hall in Derbyshire takes its name from a local legend about Dorothy Vernon, who was said to have eloped with John Manners in the sixteenth century by slipping down a flight of steps and across the garden to meet him. The photochrom process used here, which was developed in Switzerland and licensed in the United States by the Detroit Publishing Company, produced hand-tinted-looking color from a set of photographic plates, so this view of the terraced grounds appears in soft, saturated hues. The print comes from the company's catalog J of 1905, part of its large series of English views, and it was likely made in the 1890s, when the company's photochrom work was at its height.
