Cromford's Black Rocks, a gritstone outcrop above the village in the Derwent Valley, set this view apart from the other Derbyshire scenes in the series. Cromford is best known as the site of Richard Arkwright's cotton mill, begun in 1771, which used water power for spinning and helped launch the factory system. The surrounding valley is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The print was made by the photochrom process, which built up color from several stone plates, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold it in the United States. Its 1905 catalog listed it among the English views.
