Few English villages carry a history as grim as Eyam, whose cottages in this view recall the plague that reached the village in 1665. Infected cloth shipped from London brought the disease in, and under their rector, William Mompesson, many residents chose to isolate themselves rather than carry it to neighboring towns. This view was printed by the photochrom process, a Swiss method that turned black-and-white photographs into color, and Detroit Publishing Co. issued it for American buyers around the turn of the twentieth century.
