Few English country houses are as easy to recognize as Hardwick New Hall, whose tall windows and six towers rise above the Derbyshire landscape. Elizabeth Talbot, known as Bess of Hardwick, had it built in the 1590s beside the older Hardwick Old Hall, and its enormous glazed façade gave rise to the old saying "more glass than wall." This print comes from the Detroit Publishing Company's 1905 catalog of English views, which sold photochrom color reproductions of such scenes. The process gave the stone and surrounding grounds a soft, painted quality.
