Bolton Abbey, in the Yorkshire Dales, is seen here from the banks of the River Wharfe, the vantage that gives the picture its title. The abbey began as an Augustinian priory in the 12th century, and its surviving nave still serves as a parish church, so the ruin remains in everyday use. The photochrom process used here transferred a photographic image onto stone for color printing, and the Detroit Publishing Co. listed this view in its 1905 catalog of English scenes.
