This view of Camberley, a town in Surrey in southern England, shows people out on the water in small boats, a leisure scene that was popular in Victorian and Edwardian England. The picture is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s that transferred a black-and-white photograph onto a set of lithographic stones, one for each color. The Detroit Publishing Company later issued many such views of Britain and Europe in the United States, and its 1905 catalog listed this one among its "Views of England." The soft, painterly colors were meant to make distant places feel vivid to armchair travelers.
