Bude's harbor entrance, with its breakwater running out toward the Atlantic, is the detail that sets this view apart from the many coastal scenes in the series. The harbor grew up around the Bude Canal, which opened in the 1820s and carried sand and lime for farming along the north Cornwall coast. This photochrom print comes from the Detroit Publishing Company's catalog of English views, issued in 1905. Its color was built up from several stone lithographic plates over a photographic base, a process that gave these sea-and-harbor scenes their soft, painted look.
