Abergavenny Castle stands in the market town of Abergavenny in Monmouthshire, Wales, although the original caption places it in England. The castle dates to the Norman push into the region after 1066, when a lord was granted land on the Welsh border and raised a motte-and-bailey fortification there. This print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s that printed photographs from a set of lithographic stones, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold views like this one through its catalogues, including the 1905 edition cited here. The color helps show the stonework and surrounding greenery in a way that black-and-white views of the period could not.
