Kenilworth Castle in Warwickshire is the subject here, a ruined stronghold whose red sandstone keep and towers rise above the surrounding countryside. The castle was among the most important in England in the medieval period, and it was the scene of the 1266 siege that ended the baronial revolt against Henry III. Later, Queen Elizabeth I's favorite, Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, lavishly remodeled it in the 1570s, a history that gives the ruin its particular interest. This photochrom print was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which issued a series of hand-tinted color views of England and Europe in the 1890s and early 1900s.
