Harlech Castle sits on a rocky ridge above Cardigan Bay in north Wales, a fortress that Edward I began building in 1283 as part of his effort to hold the country after conquering it. Its long defense during the Wars of the Roses gave rise to the Welsh song "Men of Harlech." This print was made by the photochrom process, which combined a photograph with several hand-prepared color stones, and the Detroit Publishing Company distributed such views in the United States around the turn of the twentieth century.
