Few Scottish fortresses look as unusual as Rothesay Castle on the Isle of Bute, where a round curtain wall rises from a water-filled moat instead of a rocky outcrop. Its history includes Norse rule, Robert the Bruce's capture of the castle in 1311, and later use as a royal residence favored by the Stewart kings. This view was made by the photochrom process, which layered several lithographic stones to produce rich color, and it was issued by the Detroit Publishing Company around the turn of the twentieth century.
