Castle Douglas, a market town in the Galloway region of southwest Scotland, is the subject here, shown from a vantage the title identifies as Dunmuir. The image was made by the photochrom process, in which several lithographic stones printed successive layers of color over a photographic base, giving the scene the soft, painterly tones associated with the method. The Detroit Publishing Company sold such views in the United States, and this one appears in its 1905 catalog as print number 13046. Its record dates it to roughly the 1890s, a period when rural Scottish towns were drawing growing numbers of travelers and when photochrom views were a popular way to see distant places at home.
