Dean Castle stands on a rise above the town of Kilmarnock in Ayrshire, a medieval stronghold whose oldest sections date to the 14th century and which was long tied to the Boyd family. This photochrom print shows the castle as tourists and armchair travelers of the late 1890s would have seen it, in the vivid color that the process offered for scenic views. The image comes from the Detroit Publishing Co., which sold photochroms of Scottish landscapes and buildings through its catalog, and its date range places it at the height of the craze for picturesque European views in America. Today the castle is the heart of a country park and houses an important collection of medieval arms and armor.
