Doune Castle, on the River Teith in central Scotland, is the subject of this print, rendered in the soft, layered color of the photochrom process. The castle dates to the late fourteenth century, when Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, built it as a fortified residence. The Detroit Publishing Company, which held American rights to the photochrom process, issued this view in its Scotland series around 1905, giving American buyers a colored picture of European sites. The tinted print turns a medieval stronghold into a picturesque scene.
