Dumbarton Castle rises from its basalt crag where the River Leven meets the Clyde, and this view is taken from the town's pier, looking across the water toward the fortress. The photochrom process used here, developed in Switzerland in the 1880s, transferred photographs to stone in several color passes, giving the scene the soft, layered tones of a painted postcard. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sold these views across the United States, issued this print in the years around 1890 to 1900, when Scottish landscapes were popular with American travelers and armchair tourists alike.
