Kilchurn Castle stands on a low promontory at the north end of Loch Awe in the Scottish Highlands, where the water meets the mountains. The Campbells of Glenorchy built the tower in the 15th century, and by the time this view was made it had long been a roofless ruin, which gave it the romantic look that Victorian travelers prized. This print was made with the photochrom process, which used a photograph as the basis for a set of lithographic stones to add color. Detroit Publishing Co. sold views like this one to American buyers in the years around 1900, so the image also shows how Scotland was pictured for a distant audience.
