Kilkenny Castle stands on a bank above the River Nore in the city of Kilkenny, and this photochrom view shows its long medieval façade in soft, hand-tinted-looking color. The castle was begun in 1195 by William Marshal and was later held by the Butler family, Dukes of Ormond, who remodeled it over the centuries. This print comes from the Detroit Publishing Company's series of Irish views, issued from the late 1890s into the early 1900s, when American travelers were eager for color scenes of Europe. The photochrom process, developed in Switzerland, was prized for its vivid tones before color photography became common.
