Glengariff Harbor sits on a sheltered inlet of Bantry Bay in County Cork, a spot Victorian travelers prized for its mild climate and wooded hills. This photochrom print comes from a series of Irish views issued by the Detroit Publishing Co., which sold color prints made by the photochrom process, a photomechanical method that combined several printing plates into one image. The company's 1905 catalog lists the view as number 12017, and the print likely dates from the 1890s, when such souvenirs were popular with tourists and armchair travelers. Its soft, saturated tones show how the process rendered water, rock and foliage for buyers who had never seen the coast themselves.
