Glenariff, in County Antrim, is one of the nine Glens of Antrim, a series of wooded river valleys running down to the North Channel on the northeast coast of Ireland. This photochrom print shows the glen as tourists of the 1890s would have encountered it, when the valley was already a popular destination for walkers and carriage parties. The photochrom process, developed in Switzerland, used multiple lithographic stones to build up color over a photographic base, and the Detroit Publishing Company later sold these hand-tinted-looking views widely in the United States. Notice how the saturated greens and soft blues were chosen to suggest the lush scenery that drew visitors there.
