Howth, a fishing village on a rocky peninsula north of Dublin, shares this view with Ireland's Eye, a small island just offshore. The photochrom process behind the print was developed in Switzerland in the 1880s and produced color by printing from several hand-prepared stone plates, one for each hue. Detroit Publishing Co. sold these views in the United States in the 1890s and early 1900s as souvenirs of places many buyers would never visit. The catalog number 12048 places it in the company's Irish series, and its soft, saturated tones show how distant scenery was once imagined in color.
