Glencar Waterfall, in County Sligo, is a small cascade that falls over a rock face into a pool at the foot of a wooded glen, and this print captures it in the soft, saturated colors of the photochrom process. Photochroms were made by the Photochrom Co. of London and widely sold in America through the Detroit Publishing Co., which issued this view under print number 12080 in its catalog of Irish scenes. The glen was a favorite stop for nineteenth-century tourists, who came in part because of the poet W. B. Yeats, whose poem "The Stolen Child" names the falls. Here the process turns ferns, rock and water into a hand-colored-looking landscape that shows how travel images were marketed to a public that had never seen the place.
