Rising above the Rhône at Tarascon in Provence, King René's Castle was built mostly in the fifteenth century and takes its name from René of Anjou, a ruler who held the title of king of Naples but spent much of his life in the region. Its massive towers and riverside position make it one of the most striking medieval fortresses in southern France. This photochrom print, made in the 1890s by the Detroit Publishing Co., shows the stone in the soft, saturated colors the process was known for, and it reflects the company's effort to bring views of European landmarks to American audiences.
