Toulouse, the southwestern French city often called the Pink City for its rose-colored brick, is the subject of this view of Lafayette Boulevard. The photochrom print dates from between about 1890 and 1900 and was issued by the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold color views of European sites to American buyers. This copy is listed as number 9480 in the company's 1905 catalog. Photochrom was a Swiss process that built up color from several stone lithographic plates made from a photograph, which gives these views their glossy, saturated appearance.
