Few squares in Paris carry as much history as the Place de la Concorde, the broad plaza at the head of the Champs-Élysées where the guillotine stood during the Revolution, including the execution of Louis XVI in 1793. This color view was made by the Detroit Publishing Co. using the photochrom process, which printed color from several stone plates. The company listed it in its catalog J of 1905 as print number 9807. The process was valued for its soft, painterly tones, and the series documented French monuments and city sites for American and European buyers around the turn of the century.
