The title names monks walking the abbey grounds on Mont Saint-Michel, a granite island off the Normandy coast that rises above tidal flats and is crowned by a Benedictine abbey founded in the 8th century. By the 1890s the abbey was no longer a working monastery. It had served as a prison in the early 19th century and was being restored as a national monument, so the figures in this view may reflect the romantic idea of the site as much as its daily life. The photochrom process, a hand-colored printing method from London, was prized for tourist views like this one, and Detroit Publishing Co. sold it in America under the Photochrom name.
