Inside the Church of the Madeleine, the Greek-temple exterior gives way to a bright, colonnaded hall of pale stone, and this print captures it in soft, saturated color. Construction began in the 1760s under Louis XV, and Napoleon later declared the building a temple to his army's glory before it was finally consecrated as a church in 1842. The color comes from photochrom, a process that combined photographic printing with several lithographic stones inked by hand, and the Detroit Publishing Company issued this view in its 1905 catalog.
