The Pantheon in Paris is the subject here, a domed neoclassical building on the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève that began as a church dedicated to Sainte Geneviève and was later turned into a national mausoleum for France's notable figures. This photochrom print, a hand-colored-looking process that Detroit Publishing Company used for its tourist views, was issued in the company's 1905 catalog of French architecture and monuments, though the picture itself dates from the 1890s. Photochrom was a costly color method that let travelers and armchair tourists own what looked like a painted postcard of famous places. Notice how the soft tints and the wide sky give the building a gentle, almost theatrical presence.
