The stone stage wall of the Roman theater at Orange, in Provence, is what sets this view apart. It is one of the best-preserved Roman stage walls anywhere, and it rises above the rows of seats that were cut into a hillside under the early empire. The photochrom process, developed in Switzerland and licensed in the United States to the Detroit Publishing Company, built its color from several stone impressions printed over one another. This example appears in the company's 1905 catalog of French architecture and monuments, and it was likely made in the final years of the 1890s.
