The theater pictured here is the opera house inside the Monte Carlo Casino, the Salle Garnier, which opened in 1879 and was designed by Charles Garnier, the architect of the Paris Opera. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed by the Swiss firm Photoglob in Zürich and made in the United States by the Detroit Publishing Company, which issued this view in its 1905 catalog of French and Italian Riviera scenes. Photochroms were hand-retouched in many color stages, so the surface often shows a soft, painted quality.
